Sandown 13:50 – Rumstar (3.75)
Last year’s winner Rumstar ticks a lot of boxes, if you can forgive his latest effort at Ascot in the King Charles III Stakes. Hope for optimism comes from the fact he underperformed last year at Ascot and bounced back to win this race.
When he won this last year, he was carrying a penalty and it was a clear career best. If you look back a couple of seasons, he’s only bombed out at Ascot, and on very soft ground at Longchamp – so is fairly consistent.
Newmarket 14:05 – Arc Ole Ole (2.75)
I was stunned when I heard the commentator say Arc Ole Ole was fifth in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, because he was so far back. He had absolutely no chance of winning and did remarkably well to finish as close as he did.
The step up in trip looks fine as he always finishes his races well, and I loved his penultimate effort at York. He was one of the last off the bridle, but there was a split second where you thought are you going to go and win this race. But he knuckled down really well and extended at the line.
Sandown 15:00 – Pacific Mission (3.00)
While Pacific Mission hasn’t shown a great deal so far this year, there were valid excuses on his two starts. Like a lot of Andrew Balding’s horses, he evidently needed his first run of the season at York, where he ran well to a point and then hit a brick wall in the closing stages. He was behind Act of Kindness that day, but the Godolphin horse had race fitness on his side.
And when he was third at Epsom, after the entire Epsom Derby meeting, I kind of told myself to put a line through everything, because it was just a chaotic weekend. Horses were coming down different parts of the track, the going descriptions were all over the place, so it was a throw away run – and from his two-year-old days he is still the horse who brings the best form to the table, particularly with his second in the Breeders cup Fillies Turf.
Sandown 15:35 – Gethin (5.00)
I’ve backed Gethin antepost, not much of a flashy price but it was with three places hoping that Ombudsman wouldn’t turn up. So, as a plan that worked and I am happy with my position in the race, albeit Constitution River in receipt of that much weight will make him difficult to beat.
The Brigadier Gerard I was kind of in two opinions about. On the bare form, Gethin pushed Ombudsman all the way to the line and then Ombudsman has gone and dismantled the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot. However, when the pair met at Sandown, Gethin got 7 lbs of weight and the winner was only probably 80% fit at best. Nevertheless, Gethin’s progressive nature gives me hope there could be more to come. As I say, there is only the French derby winner that worries me greatly.
