Republic of Ireland vs Austria – Nations League 2026/27 Match Preview

by Danny

The Republic of Ireland’s first home match in League B of the 2026-27 Nations League pits them against a tricky opponent in Austria.

Under the guidance of Ralf Rangnick, the Austrians reached the knockout stage of World Cup 2026, but were ultimately dumped out by eventual champions Spain in the Round of 32.

Heimir Hallgrimsson will therefore be very wary of the threat posed by the visitors, and will urge the home fans inside Dublin’s Aviva Stadium to really get behind his players on Thursday night.

We should be in for another great match, and you can check out our full online betting preview for Republic of Ireland vs Austria below, which contains some handy tips and the latest Nations League odds.

Republic of Ireland vs Austria Preview

The Republic of Ireland suffered a 1-0 defeat in Kosovo on Matchday 1 of this competition, but responded brilliantly against Israel.

Hallgrimsson’s side dominated from the outset in Debrecen to claim a deserved 3-0 victory, secured by goals from Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jack Moylan.

Austria opened their Nations League account with a 3-1 home victory over Israel, and then repeated that scoreline against Kosovo last Sunday in Vienna.

It has been an impressive start from the Austrians after the poor finish to their 2024-25 endeavours, which saw them draw twice at home before suffering a 2-0 loss in Serbia.

This is the first meeting between these nations since UEFA’s World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign. The Irish recorded an impressive 1-0 victory on the road, before a 1-1 draw in Dublin.

Republic of Ireland vs Austria Betting Tips

Draw no bet – Republic of Ireland @ 2.45

With the confidence gained from the big victory over Israel, we like the look of the odds on a positive result for the Irish – who are unbeaten in their last nine home matches. That run also includes the famous 2-0 win over Portugal in World Cup 2026 qualifying. So while Austria are a solid outfit, this selection could be worth backing, with the added caveat of a stake being returned in the event of a draw.

Double chance – Republic of Ireland win or draw @ 1.65

This selection involves less risk when covering the two least likely outcomes, in terms of the pre-match odds anyway. The Republic of Ireland suffered just two home defeats since June 2024, which is a pretty good record.

Player will score and his team will win – Troy Parrott @ 5.50

Okay, this is by far the boldest selection of the lot, but hear us out. Parrott scored in four of his last five competitive international appearances, with the Irish going on to win three of those games – the exception being the heartbreaking UEFA World Cup play-off defeat to Czech Republic back in March. As such, this well-priced pick could be well worth a punt.
