The Champions League is the biggest prize in European club football. Every season, the continent’s leading teams compete for the chance to lift the famous trophy, but only a relatively small group of clubs have managed to win it repeatedly.
The competition began as the European Cup in 1955 before being relaunched as the UEFA Champions League for the 1992/93 season. Across both eras, certain clubs have built extraordinary records through generations of great players, managers and memorable European nights.
Here, we rank the most successful Champions League teams of all time based on the number of European Cup and Champions League titles they have won.

10. Chelsea – 2 Titles
Chelsea have won European football’s biggest club competition twice, with both triumphs arriving during the Champions League era.
Their first success came in 2012, when they defeated Bayern Munich on penalties in the final at the German club’s own Allianz Arena. Didier Drogba scored a late equaliser before converting the decisive penalty in the shootout.
Chelsea lifted the trophy again in 2021 after beating Manchester City 1-0 in Porto. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the match.
Despite their two victories coming nine years apart, both runs demonstrated Chelsea’s ability to produce disciplined knockout performances against elite opposition.
9. Juventus – 2 Titles
Juventus are among the most recognisable clubs in European football and have twice been crowned champions of Europe.
Their first European Cup victory arrived in 1985 before they added a second title in 1996. That latter triumph came when Juventus defeated Ajax on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Rome.
The Italian giants have also experienced considerable frustration in the competition. Juventus have reached numerous finals without being able to turn all of those appearances into trophies.
Their combination of two victories and repeated appearances in the latter stages still makes them one of the most significant clubs in Champions League history.
8. Benfica – 2 Titles
Benfica were one of the dominant forces in European football during the early 1960s.
The Portuguese club ended Real Madrid’s run of five successive European Cup victories when they won the tournament in 1961. Benfica then successfully defended the trophy in 1962, defeating Real Madrid 5-3 in a memorable final.
The great Eusébio became closely associated with Benfica’s European success and helped establish the club as one of the continent’s major names.
Benfica have reached several finals since those triumphs without winning another title, but their back-to-back victories guarantee an important place in the competition’s history.
7. Inter Milan – 3 Titles
Inter Milan have won Europe’s premier club competition three times.
Two of those victories arrived during a remarkable spell under manager Helenio Herrera in the 1960s. Inter won consecutive European Cups in 1964 and 1965, becoming one of the defining teams of the era.
Their third success came 45 years later in 2010 under José Mourinho.
That Inter side defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final in Madrid, with Diego Milito scoring both goals. The victory completed a historic Treble after Inter had already won Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
Few European triumphs have been as complete as Inter’s 2009/10 campaign.
6. Manchester United – 3 Titles
Manchester United have been crowned European champions three times, with each success representing a significant chapter in the club’s history.
Their first European Cup victory came in 1968 when they defeated Benfica at Wembley. United became the first English club to win the competition.
The second arrived in dramatic fashion in 1999. Trailing Bayern Munich late in the final, goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær in stoppage time completed one of the most famous comebacks in Champions League history.
United won their third title in 2008, defeating Chelsea on penalties in Moscow after a 1-1 draw.
5. Ajax – 4 Titles
Ajax played a major role in transforming European football during the 1970s.
The Amsterdam club won three consecutive European Cups between 1971 and 1973, with Johan Cruyff at the heart of a team renowned for its innovative interpretation of Total Football.
Ajax’s fourth European crown arrived in 1995. A young side managed by Louis van Gaal defeated AC Milan 1-0 in Vienna, with substitute Patrick Kluivert scoring the winning goal.
The club has often developed elite players before they moved to wealthier European teams, making its four titles particularly impressive.
Ajax’s influence extends far beyond the number of trophies in its cabinet.
4. Barcelona – 5 Titles
Barcelona have won the European Cup and Champions League five times.
Their first success did not arrive until 1992, when Ronald Koeman’s free kick secured victory over Sampdoria at Wembley.
Barcelona then enjoyed their greatest period of European success during the 2000s and 2010s. Teams featuring players such as Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andrés Iniesta combined technical brilliance with extraordinary control of possession.
Champions League victories followed in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015.
The 2009 and 2011 teams coached by Pep Guardiola are particularly celebrated and are often regarded among the finest club sides in modern football.
3. Bayern Munich – 6 Titles
Bayern Munich have won Europe’s premier club competition six times, making them Germany’s most successful side on the continental stage.
Their first period of dominance came during the 1970s, when Bayern won three successive European Cups between 1974 and 1976.
The club later added Champions League titles in 2001, 2013 and 2020.
Their 2020 campaign was especially impressive. Bayern won every match they played in the competition that season before defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Across different generations, Bayern’s consistency has been one of their defining qualities. Few clubs have remained genuine Champions League contenders for such a prolonged period.
2. Liverpool – 6 Titles
Liverpool have won the European Cup and Champions League six times, the highest total of any English club.
Their first victory came in 1977, beginning an exceptional period in which Liverpool won four European Cups in eight seasons. Further triumphs followed in 1978, 1981 and 1984.
Their fifth victory came in one of football’s most famous finals.
Liverpool trailed AC Milan 3-0 at half-time in Istanbul in 2005 before scoring three times in six second-half minutes. The match eventually went to penalties, where Liverpool completed an extraordinary comeback.
They won their sixth title in 2019 by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid.
1. Real Madrid – 15 Titles
No club comes close to Real Madrid’s record in Europe’s biggest competition.
The Spanish giants have won the European Cup and Champions League 15 times, more than twice as many as their nearest rivals.
Their domination began immediately. Real Madrid won each of the competition’s first five editions between 1956 and 1960, with legendary players such as Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás helping establish the club’s European identity.
Madrid later became equally dominant in the modern Champions League era.
Between 2014 and 2018, they won four titles in five seasons, including three consecutive victories from 2016 to 2018. Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema were central to that remarkable period.
Another title followed in 2022 before Real Madrid lifted their 15th European crown in 2024.
More than any other club, Real Madrid have developed a reputation for producing their best football when the Champions League reaches its decisive stages.
Other Multiple Champions League Winners
Several clubs sit just outside the leading positions but still possess outstanding European records.
Nottingham Forest famously won consecutive European Cups in 1979 and 1980, meaning they have lifted Europe’s biggest trophy twice despite spending long periods outside the continent’s elite.
Porto also have two titles, winning in 1987 and again under José Mourinho in 2004.
Paris Saint-Germain joined the multiple-winners club after claiming their first Champions League crown in 2025 and successfully defending it in 2026.
These achievements highlight how difficult it is simply to win the competition once, let alone dominate it over several generations.
Which Club Has Dominated the Champions League Most?
Real Madrid’s 15 titles make them comfortably the most successful club in European Cup and Champions League history.
Their record is especially remarkable because their victories span vastly different eras. From the pioneering side of the 1950s to the teams that dominated the modern competition, Madrid have repeatedly rebuilt while maintaining their reputation as Europe’s benchmark club.
AC Milan sit second with seven titles, while Liverpool and Bayern Munich have six each. Barcelona complete the leading five with five European crowns.
The gap between Real Madrid and everybody else demonstrates just how exceptional their European record has become.
