Liverpool All Time 11

by Danny

Few clubs in world football can match Liverpool for history, trophies and iconic players. From the legendary teams built by Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley to the modern success achieved under Jürgen Klopp, generations of outstanding footballers have represented the Reds.

That makes selecting a Liverpool all time 11 incredibly difficult. The club has enjoyed enormous success in English and European football, producing legendary defenders, midfielders and goalscorers along the way.

Our Liverpool greatest XI is based mainly on what each player achieved at Anfield, taking into account individual quality, longevity, trophies, influence and importance to some of the greatest teams in the club’s history.

How We Chose Our Liverpool All-Time XI

There is no single correct Liverpool all-time XI. Supporters from different generations will naturally have different opinions, and several positions feature genuine competition between club legends.

Our choices are based primarily on performances for Liverpool rather than achievements elsewhere. Major trophies, consistency, longevity and influence have also been considered.

We have selected a 4-3-3 formation, giving the side balance while providing space for some of the finest attacking players ever to wear the Liverpool shirt.

Liverpool All Time 11

Goalkeeper – Ray Clemence

Ray Clemence gets the goalkeeper position after playing a central role in one of Liverpool’s most successful periods.

Signed by Bill Shankly, Clemence developed into an extraordinarily reliable presence during the 1970s and early 1980s. He helped Liverpool win multiple league championships and European Cups while becoming one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation.

His consistency and longevity narrowly earn him the position ahead of modern favourite Alisson Becker and fellow Liverpool great Bruce Grobbelaar.

Right-Back – Phil Neal

Phil Neal is one of Liverpool’s most decorated players and an obvious candidate at right-back.

The dependable defender joined the club in 1974 and became a fixture during an era of remarkable domestic and European dominance. Neal won eight league championships and four European Cups during his Liverpool career.

He was also a reliable penalty taker and regularly contributed important goals. His extraordinary medal collection and sustained consistency make him extremely difficult to overlook.

Centre-Back – Alan Hansen

Alan Hansen brought exceptional composure and intelligence to Liverpool’s defence.

The Scottish centre-back was comfortable in possession, read the game superbly and became an important figure in the dominant Liverpool teams of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Hansen won eight league titles and three European Cups with the club. His ability to defend while calmly starting attacks from the back made him one of the outstanding centre-halves in British football history.

Centre-Back – Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk partners Hansen in the centre of defence.

Liverpool’s signing of the Dutch international proved transformative. Van Dijk provided pace, strength, aerial dominance and leadership, helping turn Liverpool into one of Europe’s strongest teams under Jürgen Klopp.

He was instrumental in the club’s 2019 Champions League victory and the Premier League title triumph the following season. At his peak, Van Dijk was widely considered among the best defenders in world football.

Players such as Jamie Carragher and Ron Yeats deserve serious consideration, but Van Dijk’s influence earns him the place.

Left-Back – Alan Kennedy

Alan Kennedy takes the left-back position after making an enormous contribution to Liverpool’s European success.

The attacking full-back joined from Newcastle United in 1978 and became part of a team that dominated both domestically and on the continent.

Kennedy scored the winning goal in the 1981 European Cup final against Real Madrid and later converted the decisive penalty in the 1984 final against Roma.

Andrew Robertson is a strong modern alternative, but Kennedy’s defining moments on Europe’s biggest stage give him the edge.

Central Midfield – Steven Gerrard

No Liverpool all-time XI would feel complete without Steven Gerrard.

The academy graduate became one of the most influential players in the club’s modern history. Gerrard combined powerful running, long-range shooting, passing ability and leadership with a habit of producing his best football when Liverpool needed it most.

His performance during Liverpool’s remarkable comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final has become part of club folklore.

Gerrard could dominate games from several midfield positions and remains one of the greatest players ever produced by Liverpool.

Central Midfield – Graeme Souness

Graeme Souness adds authority, technical quality and toughness to the midfield.

The Scottish midfielder was central to Liverpool’s dominance during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He possessed an outstanding passing range but was equally comfortable competing physically and setting the tempo of matches.

Souness won five league titles and three European Cups during his time at Anfield before later becoming club captain.

Alongside Gerrard, he would provide this Liverpool greatest XI with enormous leadership and presence.

Attacking Midfield – Kenny Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish occupies the most advanced midfield role, although the Liverpool legend could operate comfortably across several attacking positions.

Signed from Celtic in 1977 to replace Kevin Keegan, Dalglish quickly became one of the most important players in Liverpool history.

His intelligence, creativity, finishing and understanding of the game made him a central figure in numerous league and European triumphs.

Known affectionately as “King Kenny”, Dalglish later achieved further success as Liverpool manager, strengthening his extraordinary connection with the club.

Right Wing – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah earns his position on the right after becoming one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever goalscorers.

The Egyptian arrived in 2017 and immediately transformed Liverpool’s attack. His extraordinary debut season included 32 Premier League goals, setting a new record at the time for a 38-game campaign.

Salah became a key member of the team that won the Champions League in 2019 and ended Liverpool’s 30-year wait for an English league title in 2020.

His combination of pace, movement and ruthless finishing has established him among the finest forwards ever to play for the Reds.

Centre-Forward – Ian Rush

Ian Rush leads the attack as Liverpool’s record goalscorer.

The Welsh striker scored 346 goals for the club across his two spells at Anfield, a record that underlines his extraordinary consistency.

Rush was a natural finisher, but his contribution extended beyond goals. His movement and willingness to press defenders made him an ideal forward for Liverpool’s style.

He won numerous major honours, including league titles and European Cups, while forming a memorable attacking partnership with Kenny Dalglish.

When choosing a Liverpool all-time striker, Rush’s goalscoring record is almost impossible to ignore.

Left Wing – John Barnes

John Barnes completes the front three.

Signed from Watford in 1987, Barnes developed into one of the most exciting and technically gifted players in English football.

His dribbling, balance, creativity and finishing made him devastating from the left, particularly during Liverpool’s brilliant 1987/88 title-winning campaign.

As his career progressed, Barnes successfully adapted into a deeper midfield role, demonstrating his outstanding football intelligence.

Players including Sadio Mané and Billy Liddell have strong cases, but Barnes at his peak was one of the most complete attacking players to represent Liverpool.

Liverpool All-Time XI at a Glance

Our Liverpool all-time XI in a 4-3-3 formation is:

Ray Clemence

Phil Neal – Alan Hansen – Virgil van Dijk – Alan Kennedy

Steven Gerrard – Graeme Souness – Kenny Dalglish

Mohamed Salah – Ian Rush – John Barnes

The team combines Liverpool legends from several generations. Hansen and Van Dijk provide composure and defensive quality, Gerrard and Souness give the midfield power and leadership, while Dalglish links play with an outstanding attacking trio.

Liverpool Legends Who Just Missed Out

Reducing Liverpool’s history to only 11 players inevitably means leaving out some extraordinary names.

Alisson Becker has established himself among the club’s finest goalkeepers, while Bruce Grobbelaar was a hugely successful member of Liverpool’s great teams of the 1980s.

Jamie Carragher, Ron Yeats and Andrew Robertson all deserve consideration in defence.

Midfield provides even more difficult decisions. Xabi Alonso was an exceptional passer, while Jordan Henderson captained Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League success.

Kevin Keegan was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s, Roberto Firmino became central to Klopp’s attacking system, and Sadio Mané provided goals, speed and relentless pressing during the club’s modern resurgence.

Roger Hunt also deserves special recognition. A prolific goalscorer and World Cup winner with England, he remains one of the most celebrated strikers in Liverpool history.

Liverpool’s Greatest Eras

Liverpool’s history contains several extraordinary periods of success.

Bill Shankly transformed the club during the 1960s, establishing the foundations for everything that followed. Bob Paisley then took Liverpool to even greater heights, overseeing a period of domestic dominance and repeated European Cup success.

The Reds remained one of England’s strongest teams throughout the 1980s before enduring a lengthy wait for another league championship.

Under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool returned to the summit of European football by winning the Champions League in 2019 before securing the Premier League title in 2019/20.

Our Liverpool all time 11 reflects those different generations rather than concentrating on just one successful era.
