13:25 Newbury: GAMRAI – WIN (6/1)
Dubai Honour is the class angle in this contest but isn’t crying out for this step up in trip and, while clear on figures, is opposable. Mount Atlas having a penalty makes things difficult for him and while I generally don’t like backing horses on stable debut, Gamrai is fascinating on his first start for George Scott. He was second at Royal Ascot in the Copper Horse Stakes for previous trainers John and Thady Gosden, and has enjoyed a steadily progressive season, being unlucky to bump into the well-handicapped Daiquiri Bay on two occasions. If he continues to improve, he may be able take advantage of his rival’s frailties.
14:10 Newmarket: HAVANA BLUE – WIN (3/1)
After a trio of second place finishes, it could be Havana Blue’s turn to get his head in front for Julie Camacho. He bumped into a revitalised Fifty Nifty when last seen over course and distance, and finished behind Tex on his penultimate start, who has gone on to run well in two valuable handicaps since. While frustrating that he hasn’t won this season, he has been admirably consistent and a mark of 80 is still well within reach. I would not rule out moving back up to seven furlongs in the future, but he is more than capable of winning over six – and it could be this time.
15:10 Newbury: COPPULL – WIN (4/1)
Taking on his elders and receiving weight as a result, Coppull looks sure to go well in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes for Clive Cox. He has some eye-catching form on his CV, winning the Commonwealth Cup trial Group 3 at Ascot, before finishing eighth in the main event at the royal meeting. His fourth-place finish in the July Cup at Newmarket was a strong performance and while having a strong career over sprint trips, he tackles seven furlongs for the first time. He brings potential to this sphere and if seeing out the trip, rates a big player.
15:25 Ripon: DARK CLOUD RISING – E/W (7/1)
David O’Meara does well in big field handicaps, normally having a battalion of animals ready to land a big prize. In contrast, he only sends Dark Cloud Rising to Ripon for the Great St Wilfrid Handicap, which could be a tip itself. The selection’s form has been strong since a visor went on back in late May, winning and finishing second over course .
