13:15 – Newmarket: The Lost King – WIN (7/4)

There is no shame in being beaten by Talk Of New York, as was the case for The Lost King last time out.

The above-mentioned Godolphin horse was a cut above that day, but the runner-up shaped promisingly and is holding his form well in group company.

His penultimate effort was equally as impressive, narrowly going down a nose to Persica from the Richard Hannon team, who importantly had his optimum conditions.

Two wins at York earlier in the year have made this a memorable campaign for connections and I think they can get their first group success with this lad, in what looks an average Group 3.

14:45 – Chepstow: Stick To The Board – WIN (SP)

This looks a perfect assignment for Stick To The Board to win on hurdle debut for Paul Nicholls and Sam Twiston-Davies.

He was very impressive on rules debut here at Chepstow when last seen, and still shaped like he had plenty left in the tank when winning his bumper back in March.

The second that day has won since, giving the form a nice look and there are rumours he could be Nicholls’ Challow Hurdle horse.

He fell in his sole point when running a big race, but the winner that day was Red Acres Max – who is another hugely exciting prospect in training with Jamie Snowden. I think he will take a bit of beating here.

15:00 – Newmarket: Desert Castle – WIN (10/11)

I think Desert Castle has a live chance in the 2000 Guineas next year and as such, should be very competitive in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.

He’s been scintillating on two starts, greatly impressing on debut over course and distance, before easily landing Group 2 honours at Doncaster 28 days ago.

There are still slight signs of inexperience on display, but this excites me more than worries me, simply because he is nowhere near the finished article.

He continues racing over seve furlongs this weekend, but will certainly get a mile in time – and there is no reason to believe he won’t go extremely well.

15:40 – Newmarket: Beylerbeyi – WIN (9/2)

Backing the favourite in a 29-runner feature handicap is incredibly boring and I will no doubt have a hard look in the mirror after I finish this column.

Nevertheless, the selection has been the victim of some painful rides this season, notably here at Newmarket when finishing fourth – and his penultimate fifth at York in August.

He ran a blinder when last seen at Doncaster and thankfully, the 2lb rise he got that day will not apply for this race, meaning he is even better treated than first thought.

This horse will be ridden cold and if he can avoid traffic problems, will go close to glory.
