IRISH OAKS – AMELIA EARHART (6/1)
Looking back at Thundering On’s performance in the Pretty Polly, I would tentatively say the drop back in trip and quicker ground were the reasons she underperformed, as opposed to her feeling the effects of her Epsom Oaks win.
However, with the scheduled fast ground again, I would look to take her on and while she hasn’t been a horse I’d back with confidence, Amelia Earhart looks decent value at the prices.
She was sent off 7/4 favourite when last seen at Epsom and I’d be willing to forgive that effort, on the basis I don’t think she handled the track. She wore a hood and blinkers, which in itself is a warning sign, but shows she is quirky – and might just need straight-forward conditions and everything to fall right.
RAILWAY STAKES – CARRY THE FLAG (11/4)
After a short-odds defeat last season, I am hoping Ryan Moore parts company with Confucius and sides with Carry The Flag, who scrambled home when last seen at Naas.
A future away from the minimum trip is almost certain, but first time cheekpieces may sharpen his early speed up as he is clearly learning on the job.
He was sent off a well-fancied 5/2 favourite for the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot but his inexperience hampered his chances, as he finished mid-division.
Aidan O’Brien has won the last two renewals of this race with True Love and Henri Matisse, and hopefully can make it three with Carry The Flag.
SAPPHIRE STAKES – ROSY AFFAIR (3/1)
George Boughey’s Rosy Affair is having a fantastic season and there could be more to come this weekend for this English raider.
She was collared in the dying strides on seasonal debut at Newmarket before going one better in listed action at Haydock three weeks later.
Rosy Affair produced a career-best performance when last seen, finishing fourth in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot, making use of her customary early speed.
Of her rivals, Jakakaro was a nose behind her when last seen and is an obvious danger.
MEADOW COURT STAKES – ONE LOOK (TBC)
The ten-furlong trip looks perfect for One Look, who has form figures of 1232 over this distance.
The latest of these came at the Curragh when she flew home to finish second behind Estrange in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes.
She was hampered that day and did well to get within a length of the winner, who is a very classy performer.
With a clear run and a reproduction of that effort, she should go very well – and is the one to beat for powerful ownership Wathnan Racing.
